Bandon Playhouse is excited to present “Old Befana,” running for two weekends: December 4-6 and December 11-13, 2026 at the Sprague Community Theater in Bandon City Park.
Old Befana is a musical-story by Ken Lonnquist based on an ancient holiday tradition. Its warmth and magic are a recipe for enchantment, stirring listeners of all ages with an illuminating spin on that familiar night of miracles, its three Kings, a bright shining star, and a very special child. Befana doesn’t know whether the child coming to make the world a better place is rich or poor, black or white, a boy or a girl.
“Anyone could be the one to make a better world,” Befana sings. “It could even be . . . you!”
In Italian folklore and folk customs, the Befana (Italian: [beˈfaːna]) is a witch-like old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) in a similar way to Santa Claus or the Three Magi, because she doesn’t know which child might be a special one who will make the world a better place.
Bandon Playhouse has provided the best in community theater, from classic plays and musicals to premiere works by new playwrights, since 1976. For more information, visit BandonPlayhouse.org.
